We Love Kari Byron

If you have ever watched the popular cable television channel Discovery Channel, you’re very likely familiar with the extremely popular MythBusters program, featuring Kari Byron. The show originally appeared with only the two male hosts who would learn about myths, urban legends and other folk tales and then try to debunk them under laboratory conditions.

While debunking myths makes for some very interesting television, one might say that debunking myths with a sexy redhead available to assist in the debunking would be even more interesting television. In fact, that is exactly what happened, as the MythBusters program brought in professional model maker and prototype designer, Kari Byron. The addition of Kari Byron to the program gave the MythBusters cast some diversity and sex appeal that it was lacking in its original incarnation. The impact on the program by the addition of Kari Byron cannot be ignored, as ratings immediately shot through the roof and attracted a new, youthful sponsor base. While the program originally was somewhat dry, despite the humor that was evident in the entire cast as well as the two hosts, with the addition of the tall and attractive sculptor and modeler, the cast dynamic on the MythBusters program has changed completely, as the combination of science, humor and sex appeal begins to emerge as a whole new show, diverging slightly from the original concept. While this is very likely not the original intent, it is undoubtedly what is quickly becoming the predominant format of the MythBusters program.

It remains to be seen what type of impact the popularity of Kari Byron will have over the MythBusters program over an extended period of time. The show was already referred to as MythBusters with that hot chick, and is only going to become more and more identified with the Kari Byron phenomenon. While the concept of instant success isn’t new by any means, it is almost redefined in the case of Kari Byron, who had very little show business or entertainment oriented skills or success when she signed up for the MythBusters program but has now become almost synonymous with professional television starlets. The overnight success of Kari Byron on the MythBusters program and the resultant ratings bonanza has become something of a television phenomenon recently. And viewers discussing Kari Byron and all aspects of her life and personality predominate on forums on the Internet as well as over the water cooler at work.

With all this attention and cacophony of praise, it is likely only a matter of time before the name of the show changes from MythBusters to another variation, MythBusters featuring Kari Byron. Or perhaps it might change altogether to the Kari Byron show featuring MythBusters. Only time will tell. But what is certain is that the appeal of MythBusters to the mass audience has increased exponentially since the addition of Kari Byron to the MythBusters cast and shows no signs of slowing.
